The Entiat School Board of Directors will hold its next meeting on January 18 at 7pm in the school library. The agenda for each meeting will be posted here, at the Entiat post office and will also be available at the school district office prior to the meeting. Additionally, minutes will be available here after each meeting.
Entiat School District has begun the process of reviewing and revising all of its board policies. The district is seeking public comment throughout the process.
Washington state law requires that school boards adopt written policies governing the operations of schools and make these policies easily accessible to school employees, parents, and the general public. These policies are the legally binding and enforceable mechanism by which the school board establishes the governance framework of the district. Because policymaking is central to the board’s governance and oversight responsibilities, it is imperative that adopted policy be clearly written, up-to-date, and legally viable. When a school board adopts a policy, it is acting like a small legislature. The proposed policy is like a bill. It must be considered, and, if adopted, it becomes a law for the district.
Board Policies do several things.
- School board policies provide guidelines to chart a course of action.
- Policies define what is desired and may include why and how much.
- Policies should be broad enough to admit discretionary action by administration in meeting day-to-day problems.
- Policies should be clear enough to give clear guidance.
Policies are usually organized into six categories. The categories are:
1) Board of Directors, 2) Instruction, 3) Students, 4) Community, 5) Personnel,
6) Business. All of the policies in each category are organized into a numbered series. For example, all of the policies related to the Board of Directors are organized into the 1000 series.
Once adopted, policies do not remain static. Sometimes policies need to be added or changed in response to new state or federal legislation or in response to court findings. Some policies simply become outdated and need to be removed from the district’s policy manual. The Washington State School Directors Association helps districts keep their policies up-to-date.
It’s a good practice for a district to review, revise and update all of its policies every so often. This process results in a new adoption of all of the district’s policies. The public has the opportunity and is invited to comment on any of the policies during the adoption process. Comments can be made orally (at a school board meeting or to the superintendent) or in writing. The policies themselves are available to the public in two ways. One is by accessing the school district’s web site. The other is by visiting the district office where printed copies of the policies are always available on request.
Board members and district staff members will be reviewing each policy series in turn over approximately the year. Each series will be available for public review and comment for at least 10 days to two weeks prior to going to the School Board for first reading. Please consider reviewing and commenting on the policies as the district works through the review, revision, and adoption of the district’s policies.
Please send all feedback to the district office.
